Pollack jokes (referring to Polish people as “Pollacks”) came about amidst the start of World War II. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, Americans were not very aware of global politics or conflicts, and President Roosevelt had instituted the Neutrality Acts keeping the U.S. out of the conflict for the time being.
When word spread in America of the very quick defeat of Poland by German and Russian forces (just over a month), Pollack jokes came about making fun of the Polish people.
And in that defeat an advance on a German tank battalion charged on by a polish Calvary division on horses. The polish Calvary was decimated and what was an act of true bravery was tossed aside as an act of stupidity (horses vs. tanks). Even though this is disputed as a myth it is still the spin put on to the polish army by the ease of the victory with Poland perhaps.
The phrase “dumb Polack” generated after WWII. When Hitler’s army invaded Poland, the Nazi soldiers were ordered to hunt down and kill any person of intelligence in the country. This included: authors, painters, teachers, and any other person with a high level of education. With all the intelligent people of Poland murdered, the phrase came to be because the “dumb” citizens were left to pass on their genes to future generations. Sad but true.

Let’s take a look at where dumb blonde jokes comes from. One theory is that the ancient Greeks and Romans so admired their flaxen-haired neighbors to the north, they would bleach their hair to make it blonde. Seeing as they didn’t exactly have the health standards we have today, a considerable amount of bleach repeatedly placed on the scalp and being inhaled could have some effect on one’s mental status.

Another theory is that in the Middle Ages, while the lords and ladies pranced around and shaded their delicate features, common people worked outdoors in the fields and became tanned and their hair grew lighter. As the lower classes didn’t usually have a formal education, tan skin and blonde hair became associated with unintelligent, lower class people.

Then there is the ever famous book by Anita Loos (that sounds like a made up name) and the movie based upon it, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, starring Marilyn Monroe. Released in 1953, this story about two showgirls-a clueless blonde and a sassy brunette. While perhaps highlighting the “fun” side of blondes (in fact, brunette women held a demonstration protesting the movie, showing that brunettes could be just as much fun), this certainly did nothing to showcase their intelligence.

Dumb Blonde Stereotype–Myth or Fact

Two blondes were in a parking lot trying to unlock the door of their car with a coat hanger.
First Blonde:  “I can’t seem to get this door unlocked!
Second Blonde:Well you better hurry up. It’s starting to rain and the top is down!”

A person went into the office kitchen one morning and found a new blonde girl painting the walls. She was wearing a new fur coat and a nice denim jacket.  Thinking this was a little strange; he asked her why she was wearing them rather than old clothes or an overall.  She showed him the instructions on the can,  “For best results, put on two coats”.

A blonde asked someone what time it was, and they told her it was 4:45. The blonde, with a puzzled look on her face replied,  “You know, it’s the weirdest thing, I have been asking that question all day, and each time I get a different answer.”

So, I have put these Pollock jokes and dumb blonde jokes up for a reason. Please do not take offense. I am not sure if dumb blonde jokes are out of vogue, but at least most people have toned down using Pollock jokes in order to be “politically correct.” The point of this exercise is to show how we have made it acceptable to put down and degrade our spouses in public. Almost all of these jokes were not found by looking up Pollock or dumb blonde jokes, but by looking up dumb husband or dumb wife jokes. These are extreme examples and are used as jokes, but have you ever been guilty of portraying your spouse as the lesser intellect in your marriage? It could be little things like the time it takes to get ready, shopping habits, or driving behaviors of our wives. Husbands are just as vulnerable with their faults like trying to load the dishwasher or washing machine, laziness, or fishing/hunting habits.

It is totally alright to have fun and to have a good time, but the next time you feel that impulse to crack that joke that puts your significant other in a bad light try to catch yourself and turn it into a positive. If anything, turn the joke on yourself. Let’s respect our spouse and try to keep from demeaning them. Work on finding the best qualities of your spouse and letting them and everyone else know that you appreciate them for those qualities.

Don’t treat your spouse like the butt of a Pollock joke or a dumb blonde joke.
